Just Another Struggling Writer

The lamentations of yet another person struggling to write a novel.

Monday Motivations; Be Your Own Cheerleader

Hello friends and welcome to another wishful week of writing.

Friends, I’ll admit it: the time change last week kicked my ass. Every day I got home from work feeling absolutely wiped. I ended up spending a lot of time in bed (well, even more so than usual) and procrastinated on my weekly writing tasks. Though I did manage to eke them all out on time, the panic and time crunch… did not feel good.

My knee-jerk reaction this morning upon reviewing my lack of productivity was to get down on myself. After all, it’s been about a month since I’ve written real words and laying in bed hissing at the sun isn’t getting my next project any more outlined.

But, honestly, what good does self-flagellation do in this case? Feeling terrible about myself isn’t going to soften up the muse. Laying on a self-directed guilt trip won’t make the lost time reappear.

So, I’m going to take the opposite approach. Instead of chiding myself for slacking off last week, I’m going to think of that rest I got as fuel to kick ass this week. I am going to remind myself that no one can be on 100% of the time, and that no one expects more of me than me. And that if I’m going to spend mental time and energy being critical of myself, I can at least use that criticism constructively.

As a depressive, I don’t expect to be able to make that mental shift every time I get down, not when I’m fighting against actively hostile brain chemistry. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try.

So, today, I’m going to try.

This week my goals are:

  • Outline 15 new scenes
  • Blog every day
  • Finish my latest read
  • Actively participate in the writing community

I’ve made so much progress so far this year, I’m not going to let it be soured by a few rough weeks. Instead, I’m going to build on it. I’m not even close to being done yet.

The latest episode of Phoenix Feather Fantasy Book Reviews is out now wherever you get your podcasts!

This week I covered The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah. I hope you take a listen!

Until tomorrow, when I’ll be bringing you another Drabble prompt and post! Toodles!

About Me

Kerry Share’s love for writing started, as it so often does, as a love of reading at an early age. At age 11 she wrote her first short story, a Harry Potter knockoff of dubious quality, and her love for creative expression was born. Throughout her teen years she continued to foster that passion through derivative work, and at 23 she turned her eye to original fiction.

Now in her thirties, having taken a break from creative endeavors to cope with an ever changing life and landscape, she is determined to make her dream of a writing career reality.
