Hello friends and welcome back to that corner of the internet where I cry about my current WIP.
Friends, fellow writers, I come to you on the first day of a new routine. Again, Kerry? You say. Yes. Again.
I’m not a morning person. Given my druthers, my day would start at around 10:00 am and end around three or four in the morning. But life has conspired to withhold said druthers, and alas I am expected to roll out of bed much earlier than I’d like. This has created a dissonance in my brain wherein I want to be productive at the same time I need to be going to sleep, when the stresses of the day have caught up with me and my mental energy is at its lowest.
Recently, I tried my hand at going to the gym in the mornings. It didn’t work out, due in no small part because I had to get up an hour and a half earlier than my already dreadfully early wake up time. My therapist then suggested to me switching my workout routine to the evenings.
At first I didn’t like that idea. My evenings are when I, in theory, get my writing done.
Except… when I don’t. Because I’m too fried at the end of the day to undertake yet another mentally taxing task. A physically demanding task, on the other hand, again my therapist suggested, might help me destress and get ready for sleep.
But then, when would I get my writing done, I wondered… until the obvious answer occurred to me.
Wait for it…
In the mornings. By setting my alarm just an extra half hour earlier than usual, I can get my day started on the right foot with some creative energy, and still make time to go to the gym or workout in the evenings.
That’s the theory anyway. We’ll see how it works out.
I also have a confession that I’m not quite ready to give up yet. Maybe next week. If this routine goes well. Wish me luck! And until next time, as always, may your writing be plenty and your struggles be few.
